Stand Up Comedy
Stand-up comedy is so new in my world but feels like I have done it forever. I decided to do stand-up comedy at first because I am someone that gets really nervous in the audition room, keeping the casting directors from seeing my true talent. So, my really good friend Irina Voronina recommended me to take stand-up comedy classes as a way to treat that nervousness.
I have to say, I was skeptical, because stand-up comedy is so scary! Yet, being that I am a former Playmate, I thought to myself, “If I have bared my whole body to the world, why not bare my soul now too.” And so I did.
I took an eight week, all women, stand-up comedy course called Pretty Funny Women, taught by Lisa Sundstedt. As homework we had to go to open mics and even though I was so scared at first, the moment I got on that stage I realized I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Lisa made it so fun to learn all about stand-up comedy and taught us how to properly write out our material. By graduation night, we got to perform a five minute set which was a complete success… well mainly because the audience were all of our friends and family, if they don’t laugh at your jokes they laugh at you so you win! Hehehehe! But joke aside, I felt strong and confident.
Since graduation day, I have been working on building up my material and have only been able to perform once more because I got busy with other acting projects, but it was another successful night.
Yet, going for this crazy tangent in my career has been the best decision I have made because not only it has made me more confident as a performer, but also I realized that now I have another venue to show producers that I can be funny, since comedy is the genre I ultimately want to focus on in my acting career. Although, don’t get me wrong, I can do drama, but I do enjoy comedy more. I’m looking forward to grow as a stand-up comic and see where this tangent will lead me to eventually.
There is a lesson to be learned guys: NEVER say NEVER. You never know where new experiences can lead your life to.
With that said, if you are in LA this coming Wednesday September 26th, 2018, come laugh with me or at me (both are welcomed!) at Bar Lubitsch in WEHO at 7:15 pm.
